OVERVIEW
Located 42kms southeast of Amsterdam, the city is full of churches, with many restored medieval religious structures.
The city can be reached by car (E35 highway) or by train. Trains depart every every 15 minutes from Amsterdam Centraal station.
Some of the most important buildings include the 14th-century Gothic cathedral of Dom Kerk, with its magnificent 110-metre high Dom Tower; the Catharijne Convent Museum, featuring a collection of paintings, manuscripts and church ornaments dating from the 9th century; the Central Museum and the Kasteel Sypesteyn, a castle turned into an art gallery and museum.
The wharf along the Oude Gracht canal offers a wide choice of charming cafes and restaurants converted from original brick cellar warehouses. The junction of Oude Gracht and the Lijnmarkt is the center of nightlife. Utrecht is also regarded as the shopping centre of the Netherlands: in the Centraal Station visitors can shop at Hoog Catherijne (High Catherine).
The warmest weather is from June to August. October to March can be quite cold because of strong winds.
