OVERVIEW
Located 215kms southeast of Amsterdam, Maastricht is a city of cafes and churches.
Flights go from Amsterdam to Maastricht-Aachen Airport, 10kms north of the city centre; flying time is 40 minutes. By car, the A2 (E25) leads to the city. Maastricht has frequent train connections with Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague, with hourly trains from each.
The main square of the city, the Vrijthof, is bordered on three sides by restaurants and cafes. On the fourth side are the Romanesque Sint-Servaas Church and the Gothic Sint-Jans Church. Excellent goods are found at the Markt (Market Square) on Wednesday and Friday mornings. Situated in Markt, the 17th century Stadhuis (Town Hall) contains a tower with a 43-bell carillon.
If you are a chocoholic, do not miss visiting Olivier Bonbons, Kesselskade 55, which has been producing chocolates and other handmade candy for more than 30 years. To sample the famous Limburg speciality, vlaai fruit tart, visit Sjef Duchateau, Spilstraat 7-9.
The weather is quite unpredictable. The warmest period is between June and August (between 21-26C). Fog is common in autumn and spring.
