OVERVIEW
Located about 20km from the capital city of Amsterdam, Haarlem's origins date back to mediaeval times. The city is rectangular in shape and is crossed by the river Spaarne, with many bridges which are raised to allow ships and boats to pass.
Also known as the City of Flowers, Haarlem holds an annual procession of floats decorated with thousands of Spring flowers as well as many other cultural events.
The main railway station is situated on the northern side of the old city centre, opposite to the bus terminal. There is a frequent train service to Amsterdam, which takes about twenty minutes. Trains heading for the North Sea ports also stop there and tickets to most European destinations are also available.
Museums include the Frans Hals and the Teyler which have many fine works of art from the Golden Age of Dutch and Flemish painting and also many modern works and exhibitions. The Concertgebouw and Stadschouwburg are the two main venues for classical music. Visitors willing to admire Mediaeval architecture should visit the city center's main square (Grote Markt) and the spectacular cathedral of St Bavo.
