OVERVIEW

Situated in the middle of the Jutland peninsula, Aarhus is the second biggest city in Denmark. Founded as a Viking settlement 1,000 years ago, the city started to develop in the 20th century when industrial growth attracted rural populations.

As the capital of the provinces, it has all the atmosphere of a big city. Visitors come to enjoy magnificent performances of the internationally renowned Wagner operas or visit its museums, theatres or other entertainment venues.

It is also possible to relax at refreshing green woods or sunlit beaches which are not far away.

Aarhus has the feel of a young town due to the fact that many schools and educational institutions attract young people from other districts.

Another important feature is the Port of Aarhus, one of Denmark's largest harbours with a cargo-handling capacity of 11 million tonnes and 600,000 containers.
