OVERVIEW
A city of steep hills, plenty of parks and tree-lined lakefront promenades, Lausanne is one of Switzerland's most beautiful cities.
Since medieval times, Lausanne has been a cultural city: for decades, the municipality has subsidized art and culture. Students are attracted to the prestigious University of Lausanne and the French-language arm of the Federal Institute of Technology along with the world-famous Ecole Hoteliere, training place for top chefs and hotel staff.
The city's hilly aspect have also given Lausanne a new role as European blading and skateboarding capital being the host of the annual International Roller and Skateboarding Contest.
Since 1874 Lausanne has been the home of the highest Swiss federal court of appeal. Many multinational companies have chosen the city to base their headquarters as well as the International Olympic Committee, which has been in Lausanne since 1915.
Some places of interest include the Old Town hill, the country's most magnificent Gothic monument and the charming lakeside resort of Ouchy.
