Situated in the region of Catalonia, Girona is known as the 'City of the Four Rivers' due to its position, at the confluence of four rivers.
Girona still preserves a walled enclosure ('La Forca Vella') which dates back to Roman times.
Some of Girona's main tourist attractions are the Cathedral, with its Gothic nave; the Benedictine monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants, an example of the Catalan Medieval style; the convent of Sant Domenech, in Gothic style; the Capuchin convent, housing the Arab Baths; and the belltower of Sant Feliu.
Girona's Jewish quarter is called El Call, whose Calle Forca features a synagogue and centres of cabbalistic study. Other important places are the Placa del Oli and the Placa del VI. Parc Devessa boasts an exotic forest area.
