Situated in the province of Malaga, Fuengirola still retains a strong Andalusian atmosphere, featuring excellent beaches, golf courses, riding centres, leisure parks, hotel complexes and restaurants, as well as plenty of cultural events.
Some of Fuengirola's main attractions are the Church of Nuestra Senora del Rosario, in Constitution Square; the Castle of Sohail, built in the 10th century; the archaelogical sites of Finca del Secretario and Torreblanca, where you can find Roman baths and a Visigoth necropolis.
Other leisure activities include a visit to the Municipal Zoo; the Sohail Fluvial Park, crossed by a navigable canal measuring 800 metres in length; the Municipal Arts Centre and the modern Peace Centre.
Visitors can practise water sports, such as sailing, scuba diving or sea fishing in Fuengirola's marina.
Fuengirola holds three major festivals: Nuestra Senora del Rosario, patron of the town, held from 6 to 12 October; Virgen del Carmen, in July; and the Festival of the Castle.
Fuengirola's specialties include salted or fried fish, sardines on the spit, the 'gazpacho' (made from tomatoes, pepper, bread, oil and garlic) and the 'ajoblanco con uvas' (a cold soup with almonds, oil and grapes).
