Located in the Galician province of Pontevedra, Vigo is a city of Romanesque churches, magnificent mansions, modernist buildings, and sculptures by contemporary Galician artists.
Some of Vigo's most important attractions are the Collegiate Church, housing the image of the Christ of Victory; Porta do Sol, the city's shopping and historical center; Plaza de la Constitucion, situated in the O Berbes quarter with its characteristic 'miradors'; do Pedra Market, an ideal place for buying Galician oysters; the Garcia Barbon Cultural Centre, designed by Antonio Palacios; and the Galician Museum of the Sea, situated at the Punta do Muino.
If you want to enjoy the sea, Vigo boasts many beaches along its coastline, such as Teis and Cies Isles. Nature lovers can head to the Municipal Park, which features Neoclassical gardens and ancient trees as well as a collection of Roman steles, furniture and statuary, and an art gallery. In addition, you can visit the Zoo, on Mount A Madroa.
Vigo's cuisine is characterized by 'cachelos' (veal and Galician potatoes), Santiago cake (an almond-based sponge) and a 'queimada', a traditional beverage obtained by flaming the local eau-de-vie.
