Situated in the south of Catalonia, Tarragona preserves much of its Roman period, which can be seen in the walls surrounding the historic center. The city is also one of the most significant ports in Spain.
Due to its past, some of Tarragona's main attractions are the terraces of the Roman amphitheatre; which used to house more than 12,000 people; the theatre, on the Archeological Walk; and the circus, where chariot races used to take place.
But Tarragona does not only have Roman ruins. You cannot miss visiting the Cathedral of Santa Maria, built on the site of a former Roman temple and Muslim Mosque; Cavallers Street, considered to be one of the most important medieval streets; Rambla Nova, which takes you to the Paseo de las Palmeras and the Balcon del Mediterraneo; Casa Ripoll, whose tower and gallery are some of the examples of modernist architecture; and Colegio Jesus I Maria, built by Antoni Gaudi.
In El Serrallo, the fishing district, visitors can taste some of Tarragona's specialties which include langoustines from San Carlos de la Rapita, crustaceans from Cambrils and eels from the Ebro Delta.
