Located in the central area of Asturias, between the river Nalon and the river Nora, the city of Oviedo boasts beautiful squares, a historic quarter, astonishing statues many architectural gems as well as 'chigres' (cider bars).
Some of Oviedo's major attractions are the tower of Oviedo's Cathedral, built in a Gothic style; the church of San Tirso; the Fine Arts Museum; the Archaeological Museum; the University of Oviedo, with a plateresque facade; Alfonso II the Chaste square, featuring the palaces of Valdecarzana and la Rua; the Regional Palace, which houses the Principality's governing body; Campoamor Theatre, which every year hosts the Principe de Asturias awards ceremony; and the Modern Arts Centre.
Oviedo's main shopping area is found along Uria street, where visitors can not only find excellent goods but also taste the city's specialties, which include Cabrales, Vidiago or Gamonedo cheeses, Asturian fabes (haricot beans), pixin (monkfish), 'carne gobernada' (stewed meat), rice pudding, and frixuelos (a kind of crepe), just to mention a few.
