OVERVIEW
Situated in the province of Andalucia, the city of Granada owes its name to the Arabs, who invaded the peninsula in the 8th century, and was the last Muslim city to fall to the Christians in 1492, at the hands of Queen Isabel of Castile and her husband Ferdinand of Aragon.
Granada boasts a universal architectural jewel- the Alhambra, a series of palaces and gardens built under the Nazari Dynasty in the 14th C at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range.
Other places of interest are the Cathedral, including the Royal Chapel where Isabel and Ferdinand lie buried; the Monastery of La Cartuja; the old Moorish casbah or medina, called the Albaicin; the Plaza de San Nicolas, famous for its spectacular view of the Moorish palace. The Sacromonte hill is famous for its cave dwellings where Granada's gypsy community used to live.
