OVERVIEW
Located in the autonomous community of Murcia, the city of Cartagena offers its visitors more than 2,500 years of history.
Founded by the Carthaginians in 227 BC, the city's origins can be seen in the remains of the Punic Wall. Other examples include the Theatre or Amphitheatre, Torre Ciega, the Paleo-Christian necropolis of San Anton; as well as temples and public baths. In addition, the Municipal Archaeology Museum and the National Maritime Archaeology Museum also display magnificent collections.
Cartagena's military past can be appreciated in La Concepcion Castle, the Sea Wall, the Military Arsenal, the Artillery Park, the Military Hospital or the Marine Cadet School, as well as the castles of Las Galeras, Atalaya and San Julian.
Cartagena also boasts baroque churches, such as El Carmen, San Diego, Santo Domingo and La Caridad, featuring artistic works from the 18th and 19th centuries.
Due to the economic boom of the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century, many buildings which once belonged to wealthy mining owners such as Casa Cervantes, La Casa Maestre, the Aguirre Palace or La Casa Clares, have been opened to the public. Cartagena's most famous monument is Isaac Peral's Submarine.
