OVERVIEW
Verona, known as the city of Shakespeare's fictional Romeo and Juliet, is one of Italy's most popular tourist destinations. It offers first-class accommodation, excellent restaurants and peaceful cafes.
You can access the city by air, Valerio Catullo Airport is 12kms southwest of Verona and there is a shuttle bus which runs every 20 minutes from 06:35 to 23:35; by car, the A4 west from Venice to the Verona Sud exit or from the north or south, the A22 to the Verona Nord; and by train, there are thirty-seven trains running daily between Venice and Verona and also a frequent service from Milan and Rome.
Verona's main feature is the impressive 12th-century Romanesque church, the Basilica di San Zeno Maggiore, whose artwork is a fine combination of Romanesque, Byzantine and Ottoman styles. Via Cappello is home to the famous Casa di Giulietta, the fictional home of Shakespeare's Juliet. Some other places of interest include San Fermo, SantAnastasia, San Pietro Martire and Duomo churches; the ancient Porta Leoni gate; the Scaliger Tombs; the Casa Mazzanti; and the Torre del Gardello and Torre dei Lamberti.
In summer temperatures can reach 36C. During winter, they can drop to -2C. The best time to visit is in the spring or autumn when there are fewer people and the temperature is warm and pleasant.
