OVERVIEW
Located in the north-east of Italy, Venice attracts visitors for its unique collection of canals, marvelous gondolas and charming balconies.
You can access the city by air, Marco Polo Airport is 12 kms from the city; by car, from Padua, Verona, Milan, Bologna, Switzerland and France (the A4 is the quickest way to reach Venice via Milan or Trieste); and by train, there is a direct service to Venice's Stazione di Santa Lucia.
The main feature of the city is Piazza San Marco. Here visitors can admire Venice from the Campanile and visit the Palazzo Ducale (Doges Palace) and St Marks Basilica. Some bridges worth seeing are the Bridge of Sighs, which links the Doges Palace to the old prisons, and the Rialto Bridge. The Grand Canal is the principal waterway with several famous bridges hanging over it, for example, the old wooden Accademia Bridge, leading to a less crowded area of the city, the Galleria dellAccademia and the Peggy Guggenheim Gallery. Santa Maria della Salute, San Giorgio Maggiore and del Redentore are some of the most important churches.
Venice is known for its Carnivale, which takes place in late February or March and lasts 10 days. During this time the waterfront is lit by torches at night and elaborate masks and costumes can be seen.
Venice is also a city for romance: a ride on a gondola along the misty canals will be an unforgettable experience. Visitors can buy excellent glassware and amazing coloured masks or enjoy a cooling gelato (ice cream) while walking through enchanting passages.
In winter the temperatures are very low, while in summer they reach up to 35C. Floods occur during the autumn and winter months.
