OVERVIEW
In the south of Italy, Salerno is a beautiful city with much to offer its visitors.
Capodichino Airport is located about eight kilometres northeast of Naples' city centre, then a drive down the A40 will take you to Salerno. You can also take a train from Naples or Rome.
The city's most famous feature is the cathedral, known as the Duomo, built in 1085 and dedicated to the patron saint of the city, St Matthew. Nearby is the 12th century bell-tower and the 9th century aqueduct. The Church of St George is located in Via Del Duomo, crossed by via Dei Mercanti, the commercial centre.
There are lots of elegant restaurants, shops and cafes. The promenade Lungomare Trieste, offering an amazing view of the Gulf of Salerno and the Amalfi coast, is the most popular area for drinking and relaxing.
Summer temperatures can reach 35C. Winter temperatures rarely drop below 10C. The best time to visit the city is in spring when the weather is warm but not too humid.
