OVERVIEW
Napoli is a city of winding narrow streets, busy street markets, old churches, astonishing galleries and museums, as well as a plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants.
You can reach the city by air; Capodichino Airport is eight kilometres northeast of Naples; by car, from the major north-south Autostrada del Sole (A1) from Rome and Milan and the A4 from Salerno and Reggio di Calabria; by train, there is a daily service between Naples and Rome; by boat or ferry, from various cities, including Capri, Sorrento, Palermo, Cagliari and Tunisia.
Naples' most important building is the 800-year-old Duomo, located near the central piazza. Some other places of interest include the baroque Chiesa dei Girolamini; the Chiesa del Gesu Nuovo; the Palazzo Reale; the impressive Castel Sant Elmo, from where visitors can admire the bay and the city itself; the 18th-century Palazzo Reale di Capodimonte, featuring a collection of Renaissance art; and the National Archaeological Museum, displaying Greco-Roman art as well as artefacts discovered at Pompeii and Herculaneum.
You can relax at Via Floridiana, a public park which extends from Vomero to Mergelina. Do not miss visiting Italy's oldest opera house, the Teatro San Carlo. Bars and nightclubs also offer an exciting nightlife.
Average summer temperatures range from 25C to 31C, sometimes reaching 35C. Autumn is rainy but you can still get a sunny day in January with the temperature up to 16C.
