OVERVIEW
Genova is a maritime and trading centre with excellent restaurants and enchanting cafes.
You can access the city by air, Aeroporto Internazionale di Genova Cristoforo Colombo is six kilometres from the city centre; by car, the autostrada A12 southeast from Genoa is joined to the autostrada network for all northern and southern destinations; by train, only 1 hour and 30 minutes from Milan or three hours from Florence; and also by ferry; from Barcelona (18 hours) or Palermo in Sicily (20 hours).
In the port area visitors can find the 12th-century Cattedrale di San Lorenzo, which houses the Renaissance chapel of St John the Baptist; the Museo del Tesoro features a lock of hair from the Virgin Mary, a glass vessel from the Last Supper, and a piece of Jesus cross. Some other places of interest include the twin-towered Gothic stone gate of the 12th century Porta Soprana; the Ponte dei Mille and the restored 16th century Lanterna lighthouse.
Outside of Genoa, medieval hill-fortresses and villages such as Casella, Torriglia, Montebruno, Fontanigorda, Rezzoaglio, Madonna della Guardia, Ronco Scrivia, and Castello della Pietra offer overwhelming scenery. Parco Naturale dellAntola, with its many trails into the mountains, is ideal for those who enjoy hiking.
Summers are hot but not too humid, with a maximum temperature of 35C in August. Winters are quite cool, with temperatures as low as 10C in January. The best time to visit the city is in May or September because there are fewer tourists and it is still warm enough to go for a swim.
