OVERVIEW
Situated on the banks of the Rhine, the city of Bonn used to be the capital of West Germany but it is also known as the birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven.
You can access the city by air, there are three airports located nearby (Koln/Bonn Airport, Dusseldorf Airport and Frankfurt); by car; or by train, there are direct trains to Bonn from many European cities.
After WWII, the city's riverfront was completely changed and the modernist Opera House and a new road to the Rhine Bridge were built. However, most of the old town centre has not been touched. It features a medieval street plan as well as a lively fruit and vegetable market. Nearby is the Bongasse Museum, once home to Beethoven, displaying the musician's memorabilia and manuscripts.
There are two main shopping streets, Sternstrasse and Remigiusstrasse, which lead to the second main square, the Munsterplatz. At the centre is the Romanesque Munster basilica, Bonn's most famous landmark. Em Hottche, dating from 1389, is one of the city's most traditional restaurants.
Bonn has summer temperatures ranging from 20 - 30C. Unfortunately, the weather is quite unpredictable so taking an umbrella with you is highly recommended.
