OVERVIEW
Situated near the Baltic Sea, the city of Lubeck was the capital of the Hanseatic League in the 13th century. Nowadays, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the world capital of marzipan.
You can access the city by air, Hamburg-Lubeck Airport is the closest;by car; by train, Lubeck lies on the main train line; or by ferry, it is linked to the Baltic port of Helsinki by Finnlines.
The Altstadt (old city) is surrounded by the Trave River, which is inter-connected with canals. Lubeck's most famous attraction is the Holstentor, a fortified gate which used to be the entrance to the city and which now houses a museum. Some other places of interest include the Rathaus (city hall) and Rathausplatz (city square) dating back to 1230.
If you want to try Lubeck's famous marzipan, visit the Niederegger shop. The history of the city's famous marzipan dates back to 1800 and the Marzipan Salon at Breite Strabe 89 will give you an insight into it. Children can have a good time at the water park at the Kaisertor in the Wallanlagen (city walls), and at the playground in the Dragerpark. Getting lost in the remaining 90 passageways of the city is also another entertaining activity for visitors. In addition, the city offers plenty of bars and cafes where you can relax at night.
Lubeck has warm summers, with an average high temperature of 63F. Visitors are advised to bring umbrellas since the hot weather also brings plenty of storms.
