OVERVIEW
Situated in the eastern region of Germany, the city of Leipzig boasts important historical architecture, tall skyscrapers and a lively nightlife. Leipzig is also famous for its connection to Johann Sebastian Bach and other classical musicians.
You can access the city by air, Leipzig-Halle International Airport is 11kms from the city centre; by car; or by train, the Leipzig Hauptbahnhof receives frequent connections from German cities.
Once Europe's largest train station, the Hauptbahnhof is now an enormous shopping mall. Other attractions worth visiting are the Opera House; the Gewandhaus Orchestra; the ancient City Hall; the Battle of the Nation Memorial; the Auerbachs Cellar and the Altes Rathaus. Historic churches include Thomaskirche, Nikolaikirche and Paulinkirche, just to name a few. In the Botanical Gardens visitors can relax while children can enjoy a trip to Leipzig Zoo.
Leipzig boasts plenty of good accommodation and fine restaurants as well as bars and pubs. Every year, in September, the Leipziger Jazztages is held: jazz music is performed in churches, student clubs and the opera house. In June the city hosts the Street Music Festival (Leipziger Strassen Musikfestival) in which musicians play in the area of the Markt, the parks and other outdoor venues.
Leipzig has the best weather between June and September when temperatures reach 25C.
