South of Hamburg, Hannover is a modern city with important cultural centres, excellent shopping facilities, and one of the finest baroque gardens in the world.
You can access the city by air, Hannover-Langenhagen International Airport has many international and domestic flights;by car; or by train, there are daily trains arriving from Berlin, Frankfurt and Hamburg.
The Altstadt (old town) offers shops, pubs and restaurants. Some places of interest here include the Marktkirche, the largest of the three churches in the old city; the Niedersachsen Landesmuseum, with a collection of paintings and sculptures; the Kestner Museum, with a collection of Art Deco from all over Europe. Among the gardens, the Herrenhauser Garten (Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen) is the only surviving example of Dutch/Low German early baroque gardening; and the Grosse Garten boasts one of the highest fountains in Europe and a baroque hedge-theatre, dating from 1692.
Bahnhofstrasse is a pedestrianised shopping street with traditional bars, fashionable discos and beer gardens. In addition, the artificial Maschsee Lake offers a small beach, boats and restaurants.
Temperatures are around 20 - 30C in summer, but in winter they can drop to -2C.
