OVERVIEW
Situated on the banks of the Elbe, Hamburg is a popular destination with a hectic harbour.
You can access the city by air, Hamburg International Airport has flights to and from 130 destinations; by train, there are two major rail stations; or by ferry, from Harwich in England to the St Pauli Landungsbrucken in Hamburg.
The Alsterfleet canal divides the city in two: the Altstadt (old city) and the Neustadt (new city). Despite suffering from a great fire, the Altstadt still features many spectacular old buildings and renovated churches such as the neo-Romantic St Petri and the neo-Renaissance Rathaus. Located in the Neustadt, Michaeliskirche is the largest Baroque church in northern Germany. Also of interest is the Johannes Brahms Museum.
In the eastern side of the Neustadt, visitors can find stylish boutiques, fancy restaurants and lively nightclubs. The best of Hamburgs galleries and museums can be found along the Kunstmeile (art mile). Also worth seeing are Hamburg Kunsthalle, Galerie der Gegenwart and Deichtorhallen.
The summers are warm and the winters are mild and cloudy.
