Capital of the Rajasthan state, Jaipur (known as the 'Pink City') is surrounded by rocky hills, forts and embattled walls.
When Prince of Wales visited Jaipur in 1876, the whole city was painted pink. Nowadays, there is a law which compels every home within the city to maintain its facade.
Some of Jaipur's main attractions are the Amber Fort, featuring a Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace); Jal Mahal, built for royal duck shooting parties; the City Palace, now a museum; and Jantar Mantar, built in 1718 by Sawai Jai Singh.
There is an endless variety of crafts including the beautiful enamel-on-gold pendants with precious stones or pearls, turquoise in miniature paintings as well as lacquer bangles.
One of the most popular activities in Jaipur is going to the surrounding hills and valleys to enjoy incredible picnics, known as 'goths'.
Jaipur's specialties include chaats, samosaas, kachoris and mirchi bada, all of which are very spicy food.
