OVERVIEW
Situated on the southern coast of Shandong, Qingdao is a port city popular among travelers and holiday-makers and also one of China's most important economic cities.
In 1897, the city was ceded to the Germans for 99 years, thus preserving much of its colonial architecture and enchantment.
The mountains and the sea offer some interesting sights, such as the mystical Laoshan and China's best northern beach resort.
The German influence is also noticeable in the town planning (lush wooded avenues and excellent parks) as well as in the local customs. These include the Tsingdao beer, produced locally from the pure Laoshan water, and the Beer festival held in August.
