OVERVIEW
Situated in northeastern China, Beijing is the capital of the country as well as its modern political, cultural and educational center.
One of Beijing's most important sight is the Forbidden City, in the city center. Protected by high walls and a moat, it is made up of dozens of halls and courtyards. It was the home of 24 emperors of the Ming and Ching dynasties and played a very important role in Chinese history, including political struggles and palace coups. The last emperor was expelled by republican troops in 1924. The Forbidden City was renamed as the Palace Museum and now is open to the public.
Another feature of Beijing are the 'hutongs'- ancient city alleys or lanes built during three different dynasties- which surround the Forbidden City.
The Temple of the Sleeping Buddha is located in the west suburbs. In the hall visitors can admire the bronze statue of Sakyamuni Buddha in recumbent position.
But this city is not only about the past; it boasts five star hotels, restaurants offering some of the best food in the world, trendy bars and excellent shops here too.
