Situated in the central region of Gansu province, the city of Lanzhou extends along a thin valley, surrounded by hills and the Yellow River. It is also one of the largest cities in the northeast.
Lanzhou used to be called the "Gold City" because of the precious metal that was found here. But the city was also prosperous because it was an important fortress (for around 1,400 years) of the Hexi Corridor, an eastern section of the Silk Road.
The city's hightlights are the Bingling Temple Caves, the least unspoilt caves in China since they are not easily accessible; and the Lujiaxia Reservoir that surrounds them.
