OVERVIEW
To the north-west of Lisbon, the city of Queluz has become a tourist attraction mainly for its enchanting Royal Palace. In 1747, Dom Pedro commissioned the architect Mateus Vicente de Oliveira to transform his occasional hunting lodge into a special summer palace.
The main attraction of this palace is its beautiful decorated gardens. Jean Baptiste Robillion was in charge of their design. They feature a boating canal, numerous fountains, and period reproduction sculptures from John Cheere. The Royal Kitchens have been converted into an excellent restaurant where visitors can try special prepared traditional Portuguese food and a comprehensive selection of Portuguese wines. The Palace cannot be visited when being used for an official State function.
