OVERVIEW
On the River Douro, Porto (also known as Oporto) is Portugal's second city as well as an important trading center.
Some of Porto's main features are the Igreja de Sao Francisco, a Gothic church; Ponte de Dom Luis I, an iron bridge built by a disciple of the famous architect Eiffel; and the Ribeira district, where you can relax watching the river and eat excellent seafood.
If you are interested in wines, do not miss doing taste tests in Vila Nova de Gaia, where port wine lodges are. There are no tours on Sundays.
Some other activities include doing short cruises up the river on rabelos boats or going for a ride on the spectacular old Douro railway.
Visitors are advised not to access the city center by car because of its terrible traffic and to be careful when going out at night.
