OVERVIEW
Once a bishopric, Braga is Portugal's religious capital - the scene of magnificent Easter celebrations with torchlit processions and hooded penitents.
The Archbishop's Palace, a grand fortress-like building, lies right at the centre of the old town. It covered a tenth of the city in medieval times and at present easily accommodates the municipal library and a number of faculties of the university. Close by is the Se , which the same as the palace encloses Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. Founded in 1070, it still keeps its original south doorway; its most amazing element, though, is the complex ornamentation of the roofline, performed by Joao de Castilho, later the architect of Lisbon's Jeronimos Monastery. In the interior there are three Gothic chapels, of which the most striking specimen is the Capela dos Reis (King's Chapel), which was built to accommodate the tombs of Henry of Burgundy and his wife Teresa, the cathedral's founders and the parents of Afonso Henriques, founder of the kingdom. Beyond the chapels is the cathedral museum - one of the richest collections in Portugal.
