OVERVIEW
Once a seaport and a city where cod fishing industry was practised, Aveiro is at present an important centre of industry. There is an old lagoon (about 65 sq. km.) which still keeps its charm with its canals and the unique and full of colour moliceiros boats, used to collect seaweed. Neat fishermen's cottages, Art Nouveau mansions and a few historic buildings sit side by side in Aveiro city. The small houses along the waterfront offer beautiful views with their distinctive facades painted with the most varied colours. The church of Misericeordia dates from the 16th
Century, while the more modest Cathedral Sao Domingos dates from the 15th Century. The city's museum holds the tomb of Santa Joana in a sanctuary decorated with gold and displays an interesting collection of primitive and 15th Century art. The Maritime Museum records the local fishing history. To the south is the world famous fine porcelain factory of Vista Alegre founded in 1824. To the east of Aveiro are the two towns of Vouzela and Sao Pedro do Sul which reflect in their architecture the revenues they have obtained for the produce taken from the fertile valley of the River Vouga.
