OVERVIEW
Situated on a hillside, Heraklion is the most important city on the island of Crete. It has a harbour for ferries and cruise liners and an international airport. The main square of Plateia Venizelou is a pedestrian area displaying cafes, restaurants and spectacular shops. Heraklion's architecture was influenced by the Venetians: there is a Venetian fortress near the harbour. The city's most important feature is its archaeological museum, containing a very important collection of artefacts from the Minoan civilization (around 1,600 BC).
