Part of the North-Eastern Aegean Islands and near the Turkish coast, Samos is characterized by verdant mountains, white sandy beaches, crystalline waters, olive groves and vineyards.
Samos Town, its capital, has two quarters- the new one, dating from the 19th century; and the old one, situated on a hill above the port. One place worth visiting is the Archaeological Museum, displaying findings from the ancient sanctuary of Heraion. Other villages include Pythagorio, Kokari, Tsamadou and Avlakia.
Samos is also well known for its excellent wine made from the local Muscat grapes.
