OVERVIEW
Fira (Thira), the capital of the island, is a commercial center which boasts one of the most impressive views overlooking the Caldera and the famous volcano that once destroyed so much of the island.
The town offers many shops, restaurants, bars as well as centrally-located accommodation. There is a famous cable car transporting visitors to and from the island's port, Skala. Visitors should not miss walking along Gold Street (Ipapantis Street) or along the edge of the caldera, particularly at night.
Most of the ferries arrive or depart from the port of Athinios, to the south. There is also a regular bus connection to the town. Cruise ships, yachts and excursion boats use the port of Skala. The island's international airport is located approximately seven kilometers from the main town.
