Part of the Eastern Aegean Islands and just 8km from Turkey, Chios is an incredible island with excellent sandy beaches, preserved medieval towns and astonishing churches.
Chios Town, its capital and main port, boasts Byzantine churches which were once turned into mosques by the Turks but which are now Christian again.
Places of interest in Chios include the Byzantine Museum, a former 19th-century mosque at Chios Town; the Monastery of Nea Moni, featuring a beautiful octagonal church decorated with golden mosaics; the village of Pirgi, whose building facades have grey and white geometric designs known as 'xista'; and the village of Mesta, with narrow winding streets and picturesque cottages.
