OVERVIEW
Crete is divided in four prefectures: Chania (Hania) is on the west part of the island. Although it is situated in a mountainous region, it also features smooth beaches, especially on its south part, where it meets the Libyan Sea.
The beautiful town of Chania, capital of the prefecture, is a town built on the sea where visitors can explore archaeological and naval museums, the old town, the folklore museum as well as the national garden.
While in Chania, you should take some time to visit Akrotiri, which is only 15 km away. Other places of interest include the ancient town Aptera; the traditional villages of Vamos, Gavalohori and Kefala; Paleohora, with a lot of historical information; the Samaria gorge, the longest in Europe; a Venetian castle in Frangocastello; and Lissos, with its therapeutic mineral water spa.
