OVERVIEW
Many visitors are attracted to Mykonos, the most cosmopolitan of all Greek islands. It was named after the king of Delos' son, Mykonos. All the giants killed by the mythical hero Hercules are believed to be buried underneath the granite rocks of the island.
Its landscape is characterized by whitewashed houses, endless sandy beaches, transparent waters, high winds, scenic hills and traditional windmills. The colourful harbour with the fishing boats and plenty of yachts make Mykonos a unique place in Greece.
Some places of interest include the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos over the port and the Naval Aegean Museum at the center of Hora with a floating annex; the commercial ship Evagelistria; Bonis, the open air agricultural museum-windmill; and the monastery of Panagia Tourliani in Ano Mera.
The best beaches in Mykonos are Platys Gialos, Kalo livadi, Psarou, Elia, Paradise and Super Paradise.
