OVERVIEW
Originally a small sawmill town, Chicoutimi has recently become one of the province's largest cities. It lies along a magnificent fjord north of Quebec City and is crossed by three mighty rivers. It is the commercial centre for the entire Lac St. Jean-Saguenay region.
La Vielle Pulperie is one of Chicoutimi's most important tourist attractions with five massive brick buildings along the waterfront that reflect the town's pulp and paper forestry origins. French is the language largely spoken in this territory.
Another really appealing site is the Saguenay's wilds - lakes, rivers, mountains and forest. Downstream, along the St. Lawrence River, you can find Tadoussac - a very old whaling village and a popular resort. You can not miss a tour offshore to see the fantastic population of beluga whales, unfortunately in danger of extinction.
