Situated in the state of Goias, Brasilia has been Brazil's capital since 1960. It took three years to build the city. Unfortunately, its design did not bear in mind the people who had to live in it since it was clearly designed for the automobile. Architect and urban planner Lucio Costa won the competition for the urban master plan, the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer designed the government buildings while Roberto Burle Marx was in charged of the landscape design. Bureaucrats and politicians live in Brasilia during weekdays but as soon as the weekend comes they speed off to Rio or Sao Paulo - which are less sterile. The poor, who work in the construction and service industries, live in favelas up to 30km (19mi) outside the city, called anti-Brasilias.
