OVERVIEW
Lying on the bay of Todos os Santos, Salvador da Bahia (often abbreviated to Salvador) was founded in 1549 and now is the capital of the state of Bahia.
The city was built on two levels: the administrative and residential buildings are situated on the hills, while the forts, docks and warehouses are on the level on the beaches. It used to be the nation's busiest port and a passageway for colonials bringing sugar from the northeast and precious minerals and gems from the south.
Many tourists are attracted to Salvador's renowned carnival. Some places of interest include 34 colonial churches; the Museu Afro-Brasileira, dedicated to Black culture; and the Elevador Lacerda, an Art Deco structure with electric elevators which daily carry passengers between the port and the hilly historic area.
The African influence is reflected in the Brazilian culture: many dishes are still called by their African names (caruru, vatapa, acaraje), and many religious ceremonies honor both African and Christian deities and holidays. The practice of capoeira, a ritualistic fighting form with African roots, is another example.
