OVERVIEW
Recife, known as the "Venice of Brazil" for its many waterways and bridges, is the capital city of the state of Pernambuco. Because its coast is lined with coral reefs, the city was named "Recife" (Reef). The city continues to be an exporting center for the expanding agricultural and ranch areas in the hinterlands.
Although Recife has developed into a fast growing urban area, some traditions have not disappeared: jangadas, a unique form of sail boat, are still used by fisherman.
Close to Recife there lies Olinda. Churches, museums, art galleries and convents compete with outdoor restaurants and craft markets, attracting locals as well as tourists. An important event in Olinda is the Carnival, one of the safest in the country.
