OVERVIEW
Located where the black Rio Negro joins the yellow waters of the Solimes to form the Amazon, Manaus is a city of highrise buildings, pedestrian shopping areas, modern hotels, old-world mansions and favelas (shanty towns). It used to be a Portuguese colonial trade outpost which became the center of the rubber industry.
Manaus is the ideal starting point for travelling to the upper reaches of the Amazon and its many tributaries, for hunting and fishing expeditions, and for visits to jungle lodges.
