OVERVIEW
Reunion is located east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. There is a chain of volcanic peaks running diagonally across the island and separating a green humid eastern zone (Le Vent) from a dry, sheltered south and west (Sous le Vent).
Saint-Denis, the capital, boasts several sites of interest including the Natural History Museum, a mosque, several temples and a cathedral. A trip along the Plaine d'Affouches in La Montagne which is lined by tamarind trees and calumets (a type of wild fig tree) is also recommendable.
Reunion's main attractions are the so-called cirques -large volcanic valleys surrounded by mountains, which create a natural amphitheatre of about 10km (6 miles) in diameter. The most beautiful cirque is probably Salazie, with its magnificent waterfalls, especially those named Le Voile de la Mariee (The Bride's Veil) near Hell-Bourg.
Reunionese people are mainly Roman Catholic and their official language is French. The country has cool, dry winters and hot, rainy summers. Reunionese specialties include unique curries -such as duck, eel and octopus curry (zourite), just to name a few. Reunion's currency is the Euro.
Some tips to take into account when visiting Reunion: the electricity runs on 220 Volts and the country code is 262.
