OVERVIEW
Nigeria lies in the tropical West Africa. Its oil rich state is the regional superpower, but although it has abundant natural resources it unfortunately remains one of the world's poorest countries.
The capital city is Abuja, but the largest economic centre and main port is Lagos, situated on the Bight of Benin in southwestern Nigeria. Lagos was formerly the capital but it was moved to Abuja in 1991.
Nigeria is made up of over 250 tribes, and this explosive mix together with tensions between the Muslim population and the Christians have contributed to decades of civil war, famine, military dictators and rampant corruption which have left the country with deep divisions that will take many years to ease.
With 500 miles (805km) of coastline Nigeria has all the ingredients to become a favourite tourist destination. Visitors are attracted to this land by its sandy beaches, lagoons, tropical forests, magnificent waterfalls and fascinating historic sites.
Nigerian people are mainly Muslim and Roman Catholic and their official language is English. The best weather occurs between December and March. Nigeria's currency is the Naira.
Some tips to take into account when visiting Nigeria: the electricity runs on 240 Volts and the country code is 234.
