OVERVIEW
Morocco is just a step away from Europe, across the narrow straits of Gibraltar, but much different from it in experience and culture, full of contrasts, colour and mystery. To some extent, this is due to its geographical position, at the crossroads where the East meets the West, Africa shakes hands with Europe, and the Mediterranean blends with the Atlantic. Its capital city is Rabat. Other major cities include Casablanca and Tangier.
Morocco's main appeal for visitors has always been its Mediterranean climate, the fine quality of its crafts and its exotic nature. Whether you visit Morocco for the sunshine, or to trek through the mountains or the hot desert sands, you will also be fascinated by the ancient Medieval medinas of the cities, particularly in Fez and Marrakech, where the souks and squares offer visitors a fascinating foreign world. Snake charmers weave their magic; the foul smell of the tanners' yards fills the air; and the call of the muezzins hover in the air from the ancient minarets.
Additionally, the Rif and High Atlas Mountains offer excellent tracks for skiing. Then, down south, some are drawn to explore the sands of the Western Sahara, on camelback, horseback or 4X4.
Moroccan people are mainly Muslim and their official language is Arabic. Morocco has wide daily variations in temperature. The country's currency is the Moroccan Dirham.
Some tips to take into account when visiting Morocco: the electricity runs on 220 Volts and the country code is 212.
