OVERVIEW
Kenya is the "Land of the Lion King" and is located at the centre of the African safari experience, with an incredible variety of wild animals and Big Five opportunities. Although safaris are its greatest attraction, the country does not only offer splendid wildlife but also a variety of outdoor attractions: the coast boasts beaches and water-based activities, the mountains are a challenge to hikers and climbers, and the winding savannahs offer spectacular views.
Kenya features astonishing scenery and a variety of tribal cultures. To the center, the landscape is mainly covered by grasslands and thorn trees, lying primarily in parks and reserves, and this is where the sacred peaks of Mt Kenya can be found. To the west, the spectacular Great Rift Valley is crossed by lakes hosting a wonderful variety of birdlife. To the east, white palm-fringed beaches and pristine coral reefs promise an idyllic beach holiday. Inhabiting the highlands and Rift Valley are two of the most well known of the several tribal cultures, the Kikuyu farmers and the tall, red-clad Masai cattle herders.
Nairobi, the capital, is the safari and hiking center, situated in the cool Central Highlands, while on the east coast the hot and humid trading port of Mombasa acts as the gateway to the resorts and immaculate beaches of the area. Other major cities include Mombasa, Kisumu and Nakuru.
Kenyan people are mainly Protestant and their official languages are English and Swahili. Kenya has a very pleasant climate throughout the year due to its altitude. The country's currency is the Kenyan Shilling .
Some tips to take into account when visiting Kenya: the electricity runs on 220/240 Volts and the country code is 254.
